I’m the founder and editor of FairMedicalBills, an independent publication about medical bills: hospital charity care and financial assistance, billing errors, surprise billing protections, medical debt and collections, and refunds owed back to patients.
I created it to put the information that already exists — hospital financial assistance policies, state protections, federal billing rules — somewhere people can actually find and use it, in plain English, with a link to the document that decides the question.
Why I Built FairMedicalBills
Most hospitals publish a financial assistance policy. Many people who would qualify never apply, because the policy sits in a PDF nobody points them to, the income limits are not obvious, and the bill arrives with a payment link rather than an application form.
At the same time, a large share of medical bills contain errors, and protections that already exist in law go unused simply because patients do not know they are there. None of that requires new legislation to fix for one person — it requires knowing what to ask for, and who decides.
How I Work
Every article and directory entry is built from primary sources wherever they exist: the hospital’s own financial assistance policy and application, state statutes, federal rules, and agency guidance. Each one links to that source, and directory entries carry the date they were last checked.
FairMedicalBills is not a hospital, insurer, government agency, law firm or debt settlement company. I do not process applications, decide eligibility, negotiate bills or give legal, medical or financial advice, and I never promise that a bill can be reduced or forgiven.
